Taking part this week in the Mark Warner Get families active campaign, you can read about it by following the link. But basically it is about being active..i know..but surprise there. 😉
This week it is all about getting sporty. Made me think of sports day when we were at school, the sack race, egg and spoon, wheelbarrow races. My favourite, the three legged race!! We are coming into the term when many schools are running there sports days but in school nowadays it has changed beyond all recongition. The schools choose the more inclusive ‘afternoon of non-competitive activity’ which involves the kids in the school being divided up into teams of about eight kids, from all different year groups and they then rotate around a variety of different activities.
There are the running races but they are team relay races so that no one child is put forward to win or lose. Im not really sure what my opinion on it is to be honest. I think its great for kids who are maybe not naturally sporty and can feel like they are part of a team…Also one of the sweetest things for me is that as the groups are made up of all the year groups, you get to see the whole of the school community working together. The savvy year 6’s helping and encouraging the nervous reception kids and making sure they are doing their part for their team…but on the other hand it gives no opportunity for any kids to shine on their own. Which surely if any of them will go into any sort of sport – that will have to happen. I dont’ know.
Although thankfully the parents race is now a thing of the past, in our school at least! No more stocking clad women hurtling down a playing field, elbows and fists at the ready, determined to make little johnny proud. Im not sorry at all that we have come into parenting after that had died a death at the hands of the craziness that is health and safety.
But…old style school sports games are still great for having a giggle, getting outside and burning off some energy. We did our own in the local park with some friends and the wheelbarrow race had them collapsing in fits of laughter at the lunacy of trying to make someone run fast on their hands.
Sometimes old school is just the best.

I try and plan a family sports day every summer…it’s so much fun and it brings back great childhood memories of school.
So what size is this?
Egg and spoon race!!
I loved the traditional games like the egg and spoon race!
I loved the rlay race at school, it was so exciting!
800 meters I won it every year I loved it.
I hated sports day at school tbh! I love sports now, run and cycle miles, but at school I loathed it. Though we did used to do an alternative sports day when I was in Junior school, and I enjoyed the stilt walking!
Rounders
I loved the high jump, so muc fun flopping onto the bit mat 🙂
Sack Race
My Favourite was the 3 legged race with my twin brother..
I loved any sort of obstacle course.
Egg and spoon race
the egg and spoon race!

I loved running!
I also hated sports day. I suppose the egg and spoon race because I stood a chance with that one!
I loved everything about sports day, especially running the mile!
dressing up, I always lost but at least it was fun.
three legged race
I liked the relay – prefer a team effort.
Sack Race
I liked the 800 metres, for some reason I could run that but I never did well at any other distance.
I def think it’s all this political correctness gone wrong isn’t it – no competitions etc.
We still have the parent races mind
Long Jump! xx
dressing up race
egg and spoon race.
I always loved the three-legged race – it was just good silly fun and it didn’t really matter who the winner was.
The Sack race.
Tug of war.
WE DIDN’T HAVE SCHOOL SPORTS DAY…
My favourite was the egg and spoon race
Sack race!
I always liked running even though I wasn’t that good at it.
The egg and spoon race 🙂 x.
Bring back competitive sports, I say! I know, it’s all lovely these days, but get to senior school/life and it’s every man for himself!
At my first school the oarents race was banned because it got too competitive! There were previously heats and much cheating of holding the egg on the spoon!
My daughter’s school is tiny – only 63 pupils in total and Sports Day is great fun with mixed year groups and teachers and the Head all joining in!
I love the idea of having your own old school games. Our youngest requested exactly this sort of thing for a birthday party once and it was one of the best we’ve had.

I loved the relay race.
I liked the three legged race.

The sack race
Egg and spoon race 🙂
Got to be bean bag race
Egg and spoon race… Yum yum
I hated sports day then and I’m not too keen on it now either! I think it was fun in primary school but these days there is so little competition and ours is just about playing nicely together, it’s a bit tedious to watch! I loved the wheelbarrow and sack race – whatever made them do away with those?!
What a good idea to recreate the races at the park. Somehow it seems to always be raining for our school’s sports day, at least you can choose a sunny day to have your own races!

Sack race – I was bizarrely talented at that…
The relay race – watching everyone make a right mess of handing over the baton to each other was always funny
Plain old running was the one for me because unbelievably I used to be good at it!
I used to love the relay – team spirit all the way!
sack race
200m run
Javelin, at Secondary, not Primary ;0).
The Famous 3 legged race, love to work in a team thats how life should be lived.
My favourite sport at our primary school’s annual sports day was the cross country running, unfortunately this was in the early 70s and the girls were not allowed to compete in this, we were stuck with the egg and spoon and sack race, how things have changed.
I loved the three legged race, my mate and I always used to win.
