a long time ago..i used to ride.
Like. properly.
I competed, taught kids to ride, worked in numerous yards with some brilliant people and with some total numptees. But horses were my passion and my plan for a long time. I was lucky enough to be able to pursue it for a massive chunk of my young years and into my twenties. Largely because of my incredibly supportive parents who were very long suffering and allowed me to get ‘into’ it.
Seems like another life now, really it does. There are few people here that would know that i used to spend my days teaching children to do rising trot and how to do a round the world! Funny how things change. Recently some friends of ours have bought their daughter a horse and the kids have been asking and asking to go and see it and finally on the day before they went back to school we went to see the new arrival!
Funny what you remember isnt it and its always the smell that takes me back. That molasses mixed with sweet hay and shavings smell. After so many years of it being my everyday routine those familiar things will never be too deep in my conscious im sure. I dont really know what happened to make it all disappear. I moved here and away from the countryside, away from home and where my ponies used to be and that was it. Life happened, work, marriage and kids and there wasn’t any space for horses physically or emotionally.
Hanging out at the yard for the afternoon I was reminded just how good horses are for little girls and boys. Learning how to look after an amazing creature that can bring stack loads of fun and exercise and keeping them away from One direction obsessions!! Nothing wrong with having horse and pony posters all over your walls!
My two older girls are so loving horses, they even got to have a little go on this pony. A little walk and trot is quite enough for any beginner…
and of course the old girl couldnt resist having a go..i was actually forced into it my the kids and couldnt walk properly afterwards for days!!..i was a little bit hindered by the hat i borrowed which was falling in front of my eyes all the time!! i think my head must have shrunk!
🙂
Lovely for the girls to experience, I’d love Monkey to try himself at some point #CountryKids
wish I could afford to let my daughter ride she loves the times she gets a go
When I was little there were horses stabled at my grandparents house. I never learnt to ride properly, but I spent a lot of time with the horses. Wonderful! It must have been lovely to go back xx

I used to love riding as a child too and kept it up into my teens. A few of my boys have tried, Theo kept it up for about a year but given we have the space for a horse it is such a shame none of them kept it up. Loving your video, I would have wanted a turn too! A great Country Kids activity.

I would love to try horse riding once but I think I’d need a shire horse to take my weight! Must be so calming to work with the horses, grooming them.

My daughter so much wants to have some pony lessons that I have to make it happen soon. I was an okay rider when I was young while my sister has been a fanatic and still goes riding almost every day on her horses. I can imagine your visit did open up the memory box in a big way.

It’s amazing what memories can be brought back by the simplest of smells or listening to a song on the radio. So glad your children were able to get a chance to have a go. #CountryKids

Looks like you all had a blast, and great that you got back in the saddle, too. I rode a little when I was young, but never seriously or like you. My 4 year old has expressed an interest, so maybe when she’s a little older we’ll give it a try. Your description of that smell had me vividly remembering, too x

Aaahh I used to be a groom for polo ponies when I was younger & loved it. Been ages since I’ve been riding. Looks like you both really enjoyed it x

Definitely something I would love for my wee man to experience. Horses are such beautiful animals.

i take it that you used to have horse and pony posters all over your bedroom walls then??? LOl mine were covered in posters of One Direction equivalents lol
I have always wanted to ride a horse but i never have and i dont think riding a donkey at the beach as a child counts!! It is lovely finding things out about people like the fact you once worked with horses!
lovely flashback post and thank you for sharing and linking it x x

Ah I used to go horse riding as a child, happy days. Glad you got back in the saddle. We are looking to take our autistic son riding one day in the hope that he will really enjoy it,
Never been a horsey person myself but I can imagine what the sights and smells must be like. They are beautiful animals, if a little scary 🙂
Henry is horse obsessed at the moment so maybe when he’s older Alex can rekindle her horse riding youth by taking him somewhere for lessons.

How lovely to know what you’re doing on a horse – I had a few lessons and so wanted to be a rider, but I still can’t tell head from tail!
