Cook on a campfire #countrykids #50things #nationaltrust #springcarnival

Its not every day you just have to step outside your back door to do some outdoor fun right outside your back door. My OH was really keen to try out his new outdoor toy and so before bed the kids de-camped in their jammies and dressing gowns to see the new ‘Kelly Kettle’ in action.

The Kelly Kettle is a system whereby you can boil water in a safe and easy to use system which basically has a little fire in a bowl underneath and actually heats the water, it works pretty quickly once the fire gets going and it can also be used on a conventional stove.

It was a little bit of playing with fire thrown in, which lets face it all kids love, they all had a go at the fire-starter thing which they all think is a great little thing to play with!!…

But the most important part all together was the hot chocolate that was promised a the end.

It was all over and done with in about 20 minutes and then it was time to head inside and tuck the kids in the beds but they had that lovely smell about them as we were saying goodnight of woodsmoke. Which just gives you such a feeling of the outdoors it was really lovely. They felt like they had, had a mini adventure in the outdoors and they smelt like it too!

setting up the hot chocolate tray – a very important job!

Skimming Stones #Countrykids #SpringCarnival.

Working through the national trust 50 things list which has enthused the kids and us with more of a desire to get outside. Also the OH has been reading this book by Rob Cowen and i think that has really given him a spur on to do more of the stuff that he has always wanted to do. He is planning a den overnight stay in the forest and already has spent his birthday money on a Kelly Kettle so that cooking and a fire when out and about are sorted.

So with that in mind we had a little impromtu lesson in skimming stones, which is mentioned in both the 50 things and the book. Always good when you have LOTS of pebbles to choose from!

Sometimes you need to take a little moment to pose

choosing your weapon of choice

then changing your mind and trying harder to find the perfect skimming stone!

and apparently this stance really helps!

then its a whole lot of throwing things in and staring at the sea…oh and mummy playing with exposure!

The one where Daddy makes a zip-line. #CountryKids #SpringCarnival

In the school holidays my OH was on a mission to build a zip line for the kids..before you go thinking that it was a small affair..think again. When Daddy is a climber and an outdoor education teacher you are going to get a good zip line…a high zip line..and a fast zip line.

and mama is going to pick up a few extra grey hairs to add to her collection. There is a video that he took when one of our girls set off from the top at the bottom of the post. If it works!!

Suffice to say that my children have all been born with a bit of an adrenaline junkie heart, none more so than my 2 year old who thankfully is too small to use the harnesses. We had quite a lot of people stop to watch and ask me where he had got all the stuff from. They look a bit weirded out when i said ‘its all his own stuff” Which may not fill you with confidence i suppose but like my OH always says he trusts his equipment, he knows its capabilities and it is looked after properly..and in turn my kids all trust him. When Daddy says throw yourself of the side of a quarry..then he is going to make sure its safe!

there was a controlled fire being set up for some of the gorse bushes. I think the boys pretty much took over

and guess who had the best seat in the house!

Petticoats, scooters and dslr. #Countrykids #springcarnival

Taking my girls out with their scooters is something that they really love to do. We are lucky enough to have micro-scooters for the kids which are so easy for the little ones to ride. Our smallest has been confident on her  hand me down scooter since before she was 2!

I made a change to my usual camera and took my images with my little canon 400d, which was my very first Dslr and the one i now keep as a backup. I often carry it in my bag wen we are out and about as it take up much less space than its big brother and is much lighter! It takes some getting used to everything being a little bit smaller. But I am a firm believer in the theory that you don’t need the highest end of camera to take great pictures. The best camera is the one you have with you!!

We had a quick 20 minutes in between pick ups of the older ones and we headed to a rainy park and got the scooters out to burn off a bit of energy and let the woofer have a bit of a run. The girls has decided to wear my Doris designs skirts that i use for photoshoots. All my girls love these skirts and i can’t blame them, they are beautiful and most of the time they are off limits but now and again the girls grab them and wear them for the day. Often its a party or other such thing but sometimes its just the everyday.

Always good to have a bit of extraordinary in the ordinary? right 😉

we thought this log looked like a pig!
